Durham & Northumberland
14 - 18 May 2012
Bill Bryson called Durham ‘a perfect little city’, with its cobbled Streets and riverside walks, as well as artisan workshops, boutiques and galleries. The view of the dramatic Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site presents one of the most stunning city panoramas in Europe and the Bowburn Hal Hotel is conveniently placed for our visit. Northumberland is an area of great natural beauty so we have a day trip with more sightseeing in the National Park to include a look at Hadrian’s Wall, which snakes across England for 73 miles and is dotted with Roman forts, and the Roman town of Corbridge, which was a supply town for the troops on the Wall and nowadays has quaint boutique shops. A visit to Hexham and its beautiful Abbey complete the day. Another day takes us south to the delightful market town of Barnard Castle and an opportunity to visit the Bowes Museum, set in a French-style chateau. On the last day we travel home via the beautiful cathedral city of Lincoln.
